Parks, leisure and the arts Withington Conservation Area

Introduction

The Withington conservation area is situated approximately three miles south of the city centre of Manchester. It consists principally of a linear shopping centre with some nearby housing at a point where one of the main radial road routes from the city centre branches: the junction of Wilmslow Road, Palatine road, Burton road and Parsonage Road.

The conservation area was designated by the City Council in July 1983, and the boundary is composed mainly of property boundaries rather than streets, but includes Tatton View in the south and Withington Public Library in the north.

Withington conservation area character appraisal and conservation area regeneration plan were finalised in July 2024. These documents detail the historic development, character and appearance of the conservation area, set out key features and aspects that contribute to its special significance, and outline actions and interventions aimed at protecting and enhancing its special character and historic interest. They have been prepared in consultation with key local stakeholder and part funded by Historic England, as part of the CARP programme.
