Refugee Week statement

Councillor Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council said:

"For decades Manchester has proudly stood as a safe haven for those fleeing hardship, persecution or war. As we celebrate Refugee Week I am proud to recognise the impact and value that refugees have brought to our great city. Not only do they strengthen our economy and our cultural bonds, but they also help make Manchester the diverse and welcoming city it is.

"Our message this week is that Manchester stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who like all of us simply want to live a life free of hardship and in peace. And, in keeping with the theme of this celebration - compassion - I would like to thank everyone in our voluntary, faith and community organisations who work tirelessly to support refugees who make Manchester their home. They do us all proud, and I am so grateful for their work."
