Manchester City Council

Zero carbon and climate change Action for businesses and organisations

Social value and zero carbon

Our suppliers help to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits for our communities. This is part of our pledge to drive inclusive growth and become a zero-carbon city.

We want to work with ethical suppliers that align with our five priorities for social value. They are:

  • inclusive growth
  • good employment
  • reducing inequalities
  • strengthening the voluntary sector
  • creating a green and zero-carbon city

Social value refers to a positive impact for local community, economy and environment. This can be an inherent social value – part of your core service or business model. Or an added social value – new initiatives you can deliver as well as your contract.

We apply a 30% weighting to all tenders (20% for social value and 10% for environmental impact). It applies to all contracts, suppliers and supply chains.

Supplier guide and toolkit

To support our suppliers, we’ve created a guide and toolkit. These provide:

  • our priorities for social value and zero carbon
  • what we look for in tenders
  • practical tips
  • examples and case studies
  • KPIs and templates

They help our suppliers to align with our priorities and deliver real impact.

They’re free for anyone to use. The guide and toolkit are useful for many types of business and organisation. If you want to lower emissions, strengthen social value and work in a more sustainable way.

Use them to improve practices and meet customer and investor expectations. And to prepare for future regulation.
