Clayton and Openshaw

  1. Clean, green and safer neighbourhoods make our city attractive. They help us feel better and safer where we live, work, study and visit.

    These are the projects that have been funded by the Clean and Green investment in your neighbourhood so far. The 'completed' projects were finished in 2024 and 2025. The 'in delivery' projects are scheduled for 2026 and 2027.

    Completed projects

    Ardwick Lads Boxing Club – safety lighting

    External lighting has been upgraded to improve safety for users.

    Bank Bridge Meadow – new seating

    Two new benches have been installed.

    Clayton Vale – repaired timber steps

    Steps along a key walking route have been repaired.

    Hewlett Johnson Playing Fields – visitor facilities

    A new noticeboard has been introduced, and toilet facilities have been reconnected to increase toilet provision.

    Lees Street – safety and cleanliness improvements

    Bollards were installed, existing bollards repainted and four new litter bins added.

    Openshaw Park – football pitch renewal

    The pitch has been repaired, reseeded and fitted with new goalposts.

    Philips Park and Bank Bridge Meadow – picnic facilities

    New picnic tables and plinth replacements have been installed.

    Sandywell Millennium Green – sports and seating upgrades

    New goalposts, astro turf goal areas and picnic facilities have been installed.

    Gransmoor Avenue – new street lighting

    Lighting has been installed where none previously existed.

    Age‑friendly benches

    Six age‑friendly benches are being installed along a designated walking route to provide more opportunities for rest and support inclusive active travel. Locations include Eastern By-Pass, Linfield Street and Ashton Old Road.

    Bins

    All on-street bins across the ward have been replaced as part of the August 2024 to August 2025 programme, and park bins in disrepair have been scheduled for Sandywell Millenium Green, Hewlett Johnson Playing Fields, Openshaw Park, Clayton Park, Clayton Vale and Delamere Park.     Philips Park – portacabin improvements and fencing

    Power upgrades, shutters and secure fencing are going to be installed to support community use.

    Play area improvements

    Improvement works are introduced in Clayton Park, Delamere Park, Hewlett Johnson, Openshaw Park Junior. Find out more about the play area and planned improvements.
