People and communities Local climate action

We’re making Manchester a healthier, greener and more sustainable city. Our target is to be a zero-carbon city by 2038 at the latest. And we want to encourage everyone that lives, works or visits here to be part of it.

We’re working to lower carbon emissions from our buildings and services. And looking for ways to improve how we do things. We have a science-based target and a plan to keep us on track. It helps us to:

  • respond to the climate emergency
  • become a zero-carbon organisation
  • protect our residents from the impact of climate change

We also have local climate action plans for each ward. They show how we'll engage people and communities in each area. And how we’ll support local projects and organisations that work with us.

The plans respond to place-based needs and are unique for each area. They do not list all the climate action in a ward. Instead, they capture our key actions to support the community. And residents in each area help to shape the plans for their ward.

Our neighbourhood teams work on the actions in these local plans. We'll update and report on them at least once a year.

They’re listed by ward (the official district areas). If you're not sure which ward you live in, check our ward map.

Get involved

You can help to deliver the plan for your area. It’s a great way to meet people and help a local project. Email your local team:

There are more ways to get involved. Find advice on ways to help tackle climate change and save money. Topics range from recycling and retrofit to sustainable planting and finding funding.
