Bank holiday service closures

The following facilities in Manchester will be closed as a mark of respect to Queen Elizabeth II: 

  • Art Galleries 
  • Libraries – Central Library will be closed, but public access will be available to those who wish to sign the Books of Condolence between 9am and 6pm.  
  • Leisure Centres 
  • Cultural venues, such as Home. 

The following services will be affected by the bank holiday: 

Parks  

Parks will remain open to visitors however we will be operating a reduced service. 

Closures include: 

  • Café's in Alexandra Park, Boggart Hole Clough, Chorlton Park, Didsbury Park, Fletcher Moss, Fog Lane Park and Wythenshawe Park.  
  • Visitor attractions including Boating, Garden Centre and Golf at Heaton Park and the Farm Centre at Wythenshawe Park. 

Toilets will remain open in Alexandra Park, Chorlton Water Park, Debdale Park, Fletcher Moss, Heaton Park, Platt Fields Park and Wythenshawe Park 

Waste, Recycling and Street Cleansing 

Bin collections will commence earlier from 6 am and there will be no bin collections after 11am, to prevent any disruption to people watching the Queen's funeral.   

If your usual bin day is Monday:  

  • Brown mixed recycling bins will be collected as normal. Please put them out before 6am  
  • If your grey/black general waste bin is due to be emptied, it will be collected as normal. Please put your bin out before 6am  
  • If your green food and garden recycling bin is due to be emptied, it will be collected on Saturday 24 September instead.

Customer Services 

Our Customer Contact Centre will be operating an out of hours service.  

If there is an immediate threat to health or safety our emergency helplines are open 24/7.

Parking  

On-street parking with pay and display on the roads will be free on the bank holiday. 

Off-street parking in car parks is pay as normal. 

Disabled badges must be displayed in disabled bays. 

No parking on yellow lines.

Births, deaths and marriages 

To support our residents, funerals already booked in for Monday 19 September will go ahead at the family's request.  

Birth registrations and weddings will not take place as per usual bank holiday arrangements.

Schools, colleagues and universities 

All education settings in Manchester will be closed on Monday 19 September. 

Markets 

New Smithfield market and the Arndale market will remain open as per usual bank holiday arrangements. 

Primary Care and Local Care Organisation 

Under the NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care arrangements, primary care services and the Manchester Local Care Organisation have agreed a joint plan as follows: 

  • The Walk in Centre, City Health (access on Cross Street) will be open from 8am to 8pm 
  • The Out of Hours service provided by GoToDoc will operate as it normally does on a Bank Holiday and patients will be redirected to this service. 
  • There will be a small number of pharmacies open and the final list will be made available on Friday. 
  • There are no Covid autumn booster vaccine clinics planned for Monday, therefore no changes are planned.
