Proposals for Chester Road/Bridgewater Viaduct/ Deansgate/Whitworth Street West

The latest plans show the proposed changes to take place on Chester Road/Bridgewater Viaduct/ Deansgate/Whitworth Street West in the City Centre, which include:

  • Construction of new footways and traffic islands
  • New controlled pedestrian crossings
  • New uncontrolled crossing points
  • New segregated cycleway (some kerbed segregation and some light flexible bollard segregation)
  • Upgraded signalised junction at Deansgate/ Liverpool Road/ Great Bridgewater Street junction with pedestrian and cycle facilities
  • New tree pits – dependant on surveys to establish feasibility

Specifically, the works would involve:

  • The creation of a segregated 2-way cycle lane (segregation style TBC) on the east side of Deansgate between Peter Street and Great Bridgewater Street
  • The carriageway would be reduced on both sides of Deansgate from the Peter Street junction to Camp Street to increase area available to pedestrians and would continue on the west side of Deansgate to the junction with Liverpool Road, as well as removing on-street parking.
  • Existing temporary bus stops either side of Deansgate between the junctions with Peter Street / Quay Street and the junction with St John Street, and on the east side of Deansgate near the junction with Tonman Street would be removed.
  • Camp Street, from Longworth Street to Deansgate will become one way, eastbound.
  • Tonman Street, from Longworth Street to Deansgate will become one way, westbound.
  • A loading / parking bay and a disabled parking bay being added on the east side of Deansgate, south of the junction with Camp Street.
  • Upgrading of the junction where Great Bridgewater Street meets Deansgate and Liverpool Road to have two controlled crossings on Deansgate either side of the junction, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross separately.
  • Unused bus stop on Deansgate south of the junction with Bridgewater Street to be removed.
  • Controlled crossings on 3 sides of the junction of Deansgate and Whitworth Street, (Castle Street already has a controlled crossing).
  • Build out of kerbs to widen footway and reduce effective carriageway at the junction of Deansgate with Whitworth Street West.
  • Widened footway continuing along the north side of Whitworth Street to the junction with Albion Street.
  • A bus gate on the westbound carriageway of Whitworth Street West which would only allow buses, hackney carriages and cycles to approach Deansgate on this route. There would be a segregated cycleway for cyclists travelling eastbound.
  • One southbound lane on Bridgewater Viaduct will be removed to accommodate a 2-way cycle lane
  • Left Turn from Bridgewater Viaduct to Be Banned for Southbound travelling traffic
  • Footways around Bridgewater Viaduct/Back Deansgate junction will be widened
