Muslim graves at Southern Cemetery

Regulations and guidance

These regulations for the owners of Muslim graves at Southern Cemetery will be enforced to ensure safe management of the site:

  1. You must have permission from Bereavement Services before installing any type of memorial on a grave. Contact the office for details of the application process and fee.
  2. Kerbs and borders of any kind are not permitted on Muslim graves. This includes stone or granite kerbs installed by a stonemason, and self made borders such as wood or plastic. They're not acceptable as they can sink into the graves over time, causing risk of accidents and preventing cemetery staff from topping up the soil. You will be asked to remove any unauthorised kerbs and borders; failure to do so will result in these being removed by our team and you'll be charged for any costs incurred.
  3. Soil mounds will define the grave area on Muslim graves. Cemetery staff will periodically maintain these, and surplus soil will be made available for families who wish to maintain the mounds on their graves.
  4. Headstones that meet cemetery regulations and are installed by a professional Stonemason will be permitted, upon receipt of an application submitted to Bereavement Services. Concrete beams are in place for headstones to be fitted on.

Due to the nature of the construction of graves in the Muslim section of Southern Cemetery, graves are unavailable for pre-purchase.
