Library computers: rules and recommendations
- You must use your own library card to book a computer.
- If you have reserved a session, you must log in to the computer within ten minutes of the start time.
- You must not damage the hardware, change the configuration of software, delete any files or attempt to gain unauthorised access to any computer network or system.
- If a virus warning is displayed on the computer tell a member of staff.
- You must not deliberately search for or view pornographic, obscene, violent or racist materials. We block: sites that are sexually explicit, chat sites (children's PCs only), any sites that include information about criminal skills, hacking, hate, dating (children's PCs only), remote proxies, violence or weapons.
- You must not send emails, messages, post blogs or publish content which is offensive, racist, obscene or with any criminal or terrorist intent.
- Leave enough time to print and save files before the end of your session.
- We recommend not saving things on the computer’s hard drive, as they may be viewed by other users, and will be deleted when the computer is switched off. Save your work on a memory stick instead.
- Parents or guardians are responsible for children's use of the internet except in staffed homework centres. You should make them aware of the potential dangers of contacting other people by email, social media or chat rooms.
- Do not break web sites’ copyright regulations.
- Be careful sending confidential information such as credit card details over the internet in a public place. We cannot be held responsible for any losses resulting from sending confidential information.
- We keep a record of how computers have been used.
- We follow to the Data Protection Act, and make every effort to protect your personal information. But we may have to release relevant information about your computer use to the police or other investigation agencies.
