Who is Extra Care for?
Extra care housing is designed:
- For people aged 55 and over, single people and couples.
- For people who have a care or support need, however, not everyone living in the scheme must have a care need.
- To provide care and support during the night if required.
- To support a balanced mix of needs in each scheme so that there will always be people who are more active.
Extra care is not suitable for people who:
- Are under the specified age criteria.
- Do not have a care or support need.
- Need constant supervision and cannot be left alone.
- Cannot ask for help when they need it.
- Have very complex needs (this is reviewed on a case-by-case basis).
- Could put other tenants at risk (this is reviewed on a case-by-case basis)
- Have been assessed as requiring residential or nursing care.
How much does it cost?
- You pay rent and service charges for your apartment, and these vary from scheme to scheme but are affordable and eligible for Housing Benefit.
- If you have a care package you will receive a Fairer Charging assessment and, depending on your circumstances, you may have to contribute towards your care costs or may have them fully covered by the Local Authority.
- Where there is a community alarm service there may be a charge for people who have pendants or pull cords to use in case of an emergency.
- All costs and charges associated with living in extra care are fully explained when you apply.
How do I apply for Extra Care?
- You can complete the application for yourself, or a social worker, health worker, friends and family can apply on your behalf.
- Your completed application should be sent to the schemes you have chosen, details for these are in: find out more about the schemes and how to request an application
- You will also need to be registered on our rehousing register, Manchester Move Register with Manchester Move
- Your application will be discussed at monthly meetings held with each scheme where properties are allocated based on individual needs and the availability of care and support.
Before you apply to live in extra care, we recommend that:
- You consider the location and area of the scheme and make sure this is an area you want to live in
- Speak to the landlord or even pay a visit to the scheme to make sure it is suitable for your needs
