Zero carbon and climate change Zero Carbon Manchester

How we work

As a Council

Our Deputy Chief Executive is the senior officer responsible for zero carbon. This high-level governance shows our commitment to tackling climate change. It influences action in the Council and with organisations that work with us.

Our climate change action plan brings together groups of high-level ‘action owners’. Each group meets eight times a year to explore, problem solve and review progress. Five lead action owners also meet every month with the senior responsible officer.

Our work with the city

We have a devolved, partnership-based approach to climate change action in Manchester. One that allows everyone to be involved. We created the Manchester Climate Change Agency in 2015. And the Manchester Climate Change Partnership in 2018. They’re responsible for driving action in the city.

Their plan sets out the collective action needed. The joint action that means the city will play its full part in limiting the effects of climate change. Find out more about their science-based climate change plan for the city.

Manchester is now a Refill Destination. More than 400 businesses have registered to offer free water bottle refills. Find out more about the Refill campaign.

Our work with Greater Manchester

We work with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester. As well as the nine other councils in Greater Manchester. And other partner organisations. Together, we can deliver change across the city region.

We’re helping to make Greater Manchester a Green City Region. Find out more at: www.gmgreencity.com.

We're supporting the Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan. Find out more at: www.cleanairgm.com.

We're supporting Greater Manchester's plan for electric vehicle charging. It aims to make us a leading city region by 2030. One where anyone can use an electric vehicle with confidence that it'll be easy to charge.  Find out more at: Home | TfGM Electric Travel.

We’re making it easier to choose greener ways to travel. It’s a key part of our plan for the city centre. We want 90% of peak morning trips into the city centre to be on foot, cycle or public transport by 2040. Find out more at: www.tfgm.com/city-centre-transport-strategy.
