Buildings and energy
Energy used by buildings and street lights is the main cause of our direct carbon emissions. We're reducing those emissions by retrofitting to improve energy-efficiency. And by moving to renewable energy.
We support projects like this across the city. We work with housing and building stakeholders. As well as UK Core Cities and the Government. Together, we find new ways of doing things and new ways to fund them.
Key action from 2020 to 2025:
- We created a new buildings and energy strategy for our estate.
- We retrofitted 40 of our buildings – saving 32,637 tonnes of carbon.
- We created a Manchester Build Standard and are working to embed it in our decision making.
- We installed 55,000 LED street lights. Reducing their emissions by 86% compared to 2009, when they were first measured.
- We have a new power purchase agreement. It'll provide traceable renewable energy and make a big impact on our emissions.
- We developed a local area energy plan for the city. It's part of the Greater Manchester Local Energy Market project.
- We built 521 low-carbon and affordable homes. They use sustainable tech. Such as solar panels, batteries, electric vehicle (EV) chargers and heat pumps.
- We’ve retrofitted Council homes across the city. We’ve installed 471 air source heat pumps and fitted 131 homes with solar panels and batteries.
