Environmental problems Didsbury and Northenden flooding: updates and advice

Updates

Thursday 20 February 2025

This is an update.

The banks of the River Mersey are being worked on. Two sections of the path along the river will be closed for approximately six months:

  1. The footpath where Hollies Path meets Mersey Path, southbound.
  2. The footpath on the back of Stenner Woods.

The footpath under the M60 is closed due to the scour around the motorway structure.

The Environment Agency has started emergency works on the River Mersey to provide a temporary fix to sections of flood embankments which collapsed on New Year's Day.

Thursday 16 January 2025

The River Mersey's banks broke during record-high floods on New Year's Day. The Environment Agency will use a helicopter to drop one tonne bags of rock to plug gaps along the riverbank.

This will reduce the risk of more flooding while they work on plans for a permanent fix.

Work will start 20 January, if the weather is good.

Thursday 9 January 2025

Over 1,000 people had to leave their homes in Didsbury, Northenden and Harpurhey when the River Mersey hit its highest level in 66 years. Water also flooded businesses in the city centre. The Council, Environment Agency, and emergency services are working together to help everyone get back to normal.

The Environment Agency is pumping water from:

  • Didsbury Flood Storage Reservoir
  • Didsbury Sports Ground
  • other nearby flood plains.

They have changed their warning system to give people more time to stay safe when floods might happen. They are checking all the damage to the river banks, as several parts of the flood wall have broken. Once the water level drops more, they can plan how to fix these breaks.
