Manchester’s population in 5-year age bands shows the largest age band is 20 to 24 year olds, with 61,900 people. The lowest age band is the aged 90 and over with 2,100 people.

There are 17,000 females and 17,400 males aged 0 to 4, which broadly increases to the largest age band of 20 to 24 with 31,900 females and 30,000 males. There is then a steady decrease shown across all the older age bands until the lowest age band, aged 90 and over, with 1,500 females and 600 males. 

50.3% of Manchester's resident population recorded by the census is female and 49.7% is male.

Manchester’s population has grown by 48,900 between censuses, it was 503,100 in 2011.

The largest increases between censuses have been in the 10-14 age group, rising by 9,500 and the 35-39 age group rising by 8,000.

Proportionally, the 10-14 and 55-59 age groups have changed most, both growing by 36%.

The median average age band is 30-34 years old, the median age is 31. 

The census recorded 214,700 households in Manchester.

Based on census figures, there are 4,773 people per square kilometre.
