What is social value?
Social value describes the extra positive impact an organisation brings to a city. This includes benefits for:
- local communities
- the local economy
- the environment
At Manchester City Council, we use social value to make sure our spending brings real benefits to Manchester residents. We apply social value to all the services and supplies we buy that help keep the city running.
To do this, we give 20% of the scoring in every contract to social value. So that every pound we spend delivers more for Manchester.
We aim to only work with organisations who:
- pay their staff fairly, including at least the Real Living Wage
- promote equality, diversity and inclusion
- follow ethical and responsible business practices
- give back to Manchester communities
- create job opportunities for people from all backgrounds
- support the local economy and neighbourhoods
We also give an extra 10% of the contract score to how suppliers will help tackle climate change. This means we work with organisations that:
- help improve air quality
- use environmentally responsible practices
- reduce waste and use resources wisely
- protect and improve the natural environment
- help Manchester adapt to climate change
Social value is not only part of our contracts. It shapes everything we do as a Council. It helps create fairer work, better health, and a happier, more equal city for everyone.
