Food

Food is part of our daily lives. But, like everything else we buy, our food and drink choices have an impact on the environment. Red meat, dairy and ultra-processed foods in particular have high carbon footprints. In Manchester, food and drink makes up around 16% of the city's total carbon footprint.

It’s not only the food we buy, but the food we throw away too. In the UK, we throw away 25million slices of bread every day. Over a year in 2021/22, UK households created over 6million tonnes of food waste. This food waste creates emissions too.

Our aims:

  • To encourage projects and campaigns to reduce food waste
  • To promote local and seasonal food choices
  • To help food growing projects across the city
