The Council and democracy Social value

What is social value?

Social value describes a wider benefit for a community, economy or environment. We secure added benefits that are extra to what's normally delivered by an organisation, contract or service.

Social value is one of the ways we strive to get more for Manchester people. We apply it when we buy the services and supplies that keep our city moving and growing.

To get the best social value for you, we add at least a 20% weighting to all our contracts. And we aim to only do business with organisations who:

  • pay their staff fairly – at least the Real Living Wage
  • promote equality, diversity and inclusion
  • give something back to Manchester people
  • create opportunities for key resident groups
  • boost local neighbourhood economies.

We also add a 10% weighting to contracts to tackle climate change in our city. This ensures companies we do business with are working to:

  • improve air quality
  • promote greener production and use of resources
  • improve our natural environment
  • make our city more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Social value means extra value for people living in Manchester. It means fairer work, health, wealth and happiness for every Manchester resident.
