The Council and democracy Respond to Your Electoral Form

Household visits by Council Inspectors

If we haven’t received a response to either the Household Enquiry Form or the Invitation to Register, Council Inspectors will visit your home during October and November to assist with completing the forms.

All Inspectors will carry a photo ID card, which they will show when explaining the purpose of their visit.

If no one is home at the time of the visit, a calling card will be left asking you to contact us.

If you have any questions, need help completing the form, or would like further information about the Canvass or these visits, please contact our helpline on 0161 234 1212 or email esu@manchester.gov.uk.

Each year, we carry out a canvass of all households in Manchester to ensure the electoral register is as accurate and up to date as possible. The information collected is used to update the register accordingly.

Respond to Your Electoral Form

Starting 29 July 2025, we’ll be contacting households in several ways to help keep the electoral register up to date:

  • If we hold an email address for someone in your household, we’ll send an email from esu@manchester.gov.uk. You’ll need to respond online by following the instructions in the email.
  • If we believe we already have the correct details for your household, we’ll send a confirmation letter. You don’t need to respond unless something has changed — for example, if someone has moved in or out.
  • If we’re unsure who lives at your address, we’ll send a canvass form. You must respond, even if there are no changes to report. If we don’t hear back, we’ll send a reminder. If there’s still no response, a canvass inspector may visit your property to collect the information. Responding promptly helps us reduce costs.

It's a legal requirement

Every household must check the information we’ve sent and let us know if anything has changed. If you don’t respond, you could be fined.

Don’t forget to include anyone aged 16 or 17 who lives at your address.

Postal Vote Application Form

If you’ve also received a postal vote application form, please visit our Postal Vote Renewals page to find out why and what you need to do.
