The Council and democracy Vote in person at a polling station

Showing your photo ID privately

When you arrive at the polling station to vote, a member of staff will ask for your name and address. This is so they can find you on the electoral register.

If this is an election where photo ID is required, they'll ask for your photo ID.

A private area will be available, so you can choose to have your photo ID viewed in private if you like. This might be a separate room or an area separated by a privacy screen.

If you wear a face covering such as a veil or a mask for medical reasons, you must remove it so staff can check your photo ID. They can do this in private if you prefer. There should be a mirror, so you can replace it immediately once your photo ID has been checked.

If you'd feel more comfortable removing your mask outside or with a female member of staff, you may be able to do this. Ask staff if it's possible.

Staff do not need to check the gender marker, address or nationality on your photo ID. Your photo ID is only used to confirm who you are at the polling station.
