Roads and transport Making Ancoats streets quieter and safer

Measures to be made permanent

After over a year of trials, we made changes based on feedback. Measures to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in Ancoats will now be permanent.

The measures started in early 2024 after residents gave feedback on the Public Realm Strategy. They aimed to cut down rat-running, making the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists. This also helps create a nicer place to relax.

Recent feedback from residents shows that most opinions are positive. About 35 per cent felt positive, 36 per cent were neutral, and 29 per cent had negative feelings.

The trial monitored traffic, cycles, and pedestrians. It also collected data on how the changes impacted the area, including:

  • The number of vehicles passing through the area as a whole is down by 32 per cent
  • More people are walking on Redhill Street and Blossom Street
  • The new crossings on Oldham Road are being used around 500 times per day
  • Collision rates are down
  • Walking and cycling are the dominant methods of moving in and around Cutting Room Square.

Some changes are going unnoticed by drivers. To fix this, we plan to install cameras at Radium Street and George Leigh Street later this year. These cameras will catch vehicles ignoring the one-way and no-entry signs. We will then issue enforcement notices.

The Ancoats Mobility Hub opened in early May. It supports Manchester’s goal of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2038. The hub has 150 secure bike parking spots and changing facilities. It also has 102 electric vehicle charging points, spaces for car club/share schemes, and 406 parking spots for residents and visitors.

Work to make the features permanent will start on 28 July. This includes some work on kerbs and should take 4 to 6 weeks to finish. Most of the work involves kerbing and build-outs around existing filters. This will cause little disruption and won't affect vehicle movement.
