Roads and transport Better by cycle: completed consultations

Airport Cycleway

We want to create and improve cyclepaths and links between Manchester Airport's new developments and nearby homes. The Airport Cycleway would connect with Wythenshawe Hospital, the town centre and industrial estates.

Our improvements would link with other proposed cycle routes on surrounding roads, making a continuous cycle route linking to the popular Regional Cycle Route 85 – an established route round the airport.

  1. New Toucan crossing at the roundabout on Altrincham Road's (A560) junction with Shaftsbury Avenue, Brooklands Road and Brooks Drive, Brooklands towards Timperley
The two-stage crossing will help cyclists and pedestrians to cross this busy road safely.

  2. Brooks Drive to Floats Road
We would upgrade the footpath to a hard, all-weather surface and replace the pedestrian bridge over Fairywell Brook so cyclists could use it.

  3. Floats Road to Clay Lane
We would reduce the speed limit to 20mph, supported by traffic-calming 'chicanes'.

  4. Clay Lane to Scout Drive
A new, hard, all-weather surface would link to Capenhurst Close, and we’d remove the ‘no cyclists’ rule between Capenhurst Close and Scout Drive.

  5. Scout Drive to Simonsway
We propose extending the off-road cycle route along Tuffley Road, cutting the speed limit to 20mph, and converting the zebra crossings to parallel crossings outside the shops on Greenbrow Road and at the junction of Tuffley Road with Firbank Road so cyclists can use them.

  6. Simonsway
We would protect the existing cycleway by separating it from traffic with 'armadillos' and then link the cycle route into the shared walkway.

  7. Simonsway to Painswick Park
We propose a continuous cycle route with better access and signage. We would use traffic-calming at crossing points on Cotefield Road and Portway to make cyclists and pedestrians safer.

  8. Painswick Park to Aviator Way
This part of the route would go through parks and quiet 20mph roads. A short, shared cycle-and-pedestrian path would connect to Hilary Road to Felskirk Road.
