Roads and transport Levenshulme and Burnage Active Neighbourhood Scheme

Phase two

Following the press release update, which was issued in July 2022, we have now agreed the design taking into account feedback from the consultation, and a review process with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

Some of the plans originally used for voluntary consultation around this scheme did not include all final road markings e.g. double yellow lines, although this was legally consulted. We have now added the latest plans, including double yellow lines, post review on concerns received from residents.

Plans for all the proposed measures in phase 2 can be downloaded, including those with road markings.

The changes include:

  • Alma Park – The proposed bollards and trees have been removed from the plan as new bollards have recently been installed. A raised table north of zebra crossing has also been removed because it affected access to private driveways.
  • Errwood Road – Provision for cycling on the existing path closest to Errwood Road on its western side outside Levenshulme High School will be extended to just beyond Ranford Road and an additional crossing on Errwood Road just north of Ranford Road has been added, to make it safer to access the north end of Cringle Park, and links to the Fallowfield Loop and Levenshulme. A raised table has been added at the junction of Clare Road, and a new segregated area for improved cycling and walking access to the new crossing. Raised tables have also been added to the junctions of Errwood Road with Rainford Road and Crompton Road to make them easier to cross. The bus stop near Crossley Road junction will be moved further away from the existing crossing to make it safer and easier to pass stationary buses. Previously proposed pavement ‘build outs’ have also been removed to help prevent queuing traffic.
  • Chapel Street – Stop and Give Way signs have been removed from plans as they were close to chicanes and may have caused queueing traffic. Also, one proposed chicane has been removed.
  • Moseley Road / Slade Lane – the original ‘cyclops’ (cycle optimised) junction has been changed to a simpler pedestrian puffin crossing (with signal lights on the same side of the road as the user, and a sensor which detects pedestrians waiting) as a result of feedback, and limited highway space at the junction not allowing for a full cyclops feature. The consultation for this junction identified that pedestrian crossings were the most important improvement required.  A ‘pocket park’ and seating area is currently being considered as part of detailed design.
  • Arcadia A6 (including Crescent) – We are creating a two-way cycleway on the west side of Stockport Road, between the proposed toucan crossing (which allows cyclists and pedestrians to cross at the same time but separately) and The Crescent. This creates a safer link to the wider area via the tunnel under the railway lines. This will mean the removal of around six parking spaces on the west side of Stockport Road.
  • Crayfield Road / Marley Road – the turning on Crayfield Road with Broom Lane will be changed to slow down turning vehicles by building out the footway to make it ‘tighter’.
  • Burnage Lane / Grangethorpe Drive – The proposed cyclops (cycle optimised) junction has changed to a simpler pedestrian puffin crossing (with signal lights on the same side of the road as the user, and a sensor which detects pedestrians waiting) as a result of consultation feedback and limited highway space available at the junction which does not allow a full cyclops junction. The consultation for this junction identified that pedestrian crossings were the most important improvement required.
  • Linden Park/Milwain Road - Further local consultation was carried out with Linden Park and Milwain Road residents, to get more detailed views on the revised filter design from people who would be most affected.
  • Linden Park – double yellow lines are still required outside seven properties due to the lack of side roads for vehicles to manoeuvre safely. A drop-down bollard has been added to ensure access for waste collection and emergency services.
  • Milwain Road – following feedback from residents, we reviewed proposals and were able to remove the double yellow lines, given that side roads (i.e., Hilbre Road and Kempton Road) offer vehicles the opportunity to perform turning manoeuvres.
