Phase two - Alma Park and Errwood Road updates

May 2023

Alma Park Primary School - Posts for the Belisha beacons have now been installed, and we are now waiting for the energy company to do the necessary electrical connections for them to operate. Once the electrical connections are complete, we will complete the outstanding reinstatement of lining and surfacing.

Erwood Road - The Belisha beacons have now been installed, and the works are primarily complete whilst we are carrying out any usual snagging as part of the scheme, and fit covers to prevent light affecting local properties.

April 2023

Alma Park Primary School - Works to the crossing near the school have begun, we are now awaiting the installation of cabling, ducts and Belisha Beacons by our street lighting contractor. Following this we will complete the outstanding surfacing of the footways and installation of the tactile paving and road markings.

Errwood Road (near Levenshulme High School) - Works to the crossings near the school have been completed, we are now awaiting the installation of cabling and Belisha Beacons by our street lighting contractor.

March 2023

Alma Park - As reported last month, work has started at the Alma Park site, and recent drainage problems have been addressed. We have worked with the school and the local community to find a solution which means that the crossing is in the safest possible location, and the loss of a very mature tree has been avoided by slightly repositioning the crossing.

A raised plateau at Alma Park school which will slow traffic approaching the crossing was completed during the half term holiday before the school reopened on 27th February.

Works will now commence on the new crossing point, followed by installation of cables, ducts and Belisha Beacons by our street lighting contractor.

Errwood Road - On Errwood Road (near Levenshulme High School), all planned work including drainage remedial work has been completed, apart from the installation of ducting / cabling and Belisha beacons, for which we are awaiting a completion date from our street lighting contractor.

Work to complete the outstanding measures near the school was carried out at weekends and over the winter half term break, and permanent surfacing has now been installed at four of the raised plateaus.

We have also renewed the existing road markings along Errwood Road from Crossley Road through to Clare Road, as all of these were relatively faint.

January 2023

Work on the Phase 2 measures at these locations began before Christmas last year. It is still under way, with Belisha beacons being installed soon, additional zig zag road markings and advance notice signs warning drivers about the crossing (temporary warning signs are in place in the meantime).

The issues of flooding after recent heavy rain at the site have been investigated and have been urgently addressed through a combination of cleaning existing gullies and installing new gullies and drainage outputs to local green areas.

It is expected that all outstanding work on these locations will be completed by February’23, depending on weather conditions, after which a road safety audit of the completed scheme will be carried out.

December 2022

Works have started for these two schemes this month which include extended cycle lanes, a new crossing and raised tables at side road junctions.

Work on the new measures outside Alma Park School on Errwood Road will start from the nineteenth of December and are expecting work to last until January 2023. This is to coincide with the school closure period, where possible.

Working hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and during this time, Errwood Road will be closed to vehicles at the junctions of Preston Road, Alma Road and Arliss Avenue, and a signed diversion will be in place. Access will be maintained at all times for residents.

A bus diversion will also be in place, with buses that usually travel down Errwood Road now travelling down Albert Road, Burnage Lane, and Avon Road, before rejoining Errwood Road.

At Errwood Road, main works are due to start on the twelfth of December (but this will be subject to weather conditions allowing works to take place safely) and are expecting work to last until January 2023.

Working hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and during this time, there will increased construction noise (which we will aim to keep to a minimum), disruption to pavement access and barriers. We will ensure temporary segregated pedestrian routes are installed, and we will have pedestrian marshals on site to help.

If you have any concerns around these works, please email levyburnageproject@manchester.gov.uk

November 2022

We are planning to start work on the ground for these two schemes this winter. They are subject to the legal advertising process for the new measures including extended cycle lanes, a new crossing and raised tables at side road junctions, and we are keen to progress as soon as possible. Because the work is taking place close to local schools, we are hoping that it will mostly be carried out at weekends. More information about the nature of the work, times, and exact locations will be shared with residents closer to the start date.
