We are offering electric vehicle (EV) cable channels so you can charge your vehicle at home. The cable channels run across the pavement and flush to its surface. This helps to keep cables out of the way of footpath users. The channel holds one charging cable.
- Watch one of our Manchester residents talk about their cable channelHear their thoughts on application process, the benefits of having a cable channel, and demonstrate how simple they are to use.
If you are a Manchester resident without off-street parking, you can apply. This scheme is for residential properties only. If you have access to off-street parking at home you will not be eligible for a cable channel. This is the case even if you do not use that space for parking currently.
If you don’t have access to off-street parking at home you may need planning permission to install an EV charger. Find out more about planning permission

How to apply
Based on resident feedback our 5-step application process is now quicker and easier to complete.
Step 1:
Use the link below to register your interest in having a cable channel installed outside your property. Completing this step does not guarantee you a cable channel.
Step 2:
Our Highways team will assess the site and decide whether it is suitable for a cable channel or not.
Step 3:
You will receive an email from our Highways team to let you know if it will be possible to install a cable channel or not. You may use the email to help you apply for your electric vehicle home chargepoint and any government EV grants.
Step 4:
You will need to use the link provided in the email to provide the documents that we ask for to guarantee installation of a cable channel. Once all documents provided have been accepted, you will be sent a link to payment, if applicable.
Step 5:
We will install a cable channel outside your property once we have received your completed application form and payment.
If you have any accessibility needs that mean you need help completing an application or using a cable channel please contact us at EV@manchester.gov.uk
Cost and ownership
The cost per household will range from £949 to £1,424.50. It depends on the type of pavement surface outside your property. We'll only ask you to pay when we have confirmed the location is suitable.
Having a cable channel does not provide guaranteed parking at the address. You need to ensure that you can park at the proposed location often enough to be able to charge your car.
You'll need to make sure that you an insert the cable at pavement level. You will need to ensure you can safely reach to the kerb to insert/remove the charging cable.
Grants
You may be able to get a grant to pay for the costs if you are a Manchester resident and:
- You live in a property in council tax band A; or
- You have a private hire vehicle or taxi licenced by Manchester City Council; or
- You’re a blue badge holder (it must be in date); or
- You’re part of a Motability Scheme.
You can still apply for a cable channel if you do not meet these criteria. Though, you will need to pay the costs of the installation yourself.
Grant funding is limited and is on a first come first served basis until funds are no longer available.
