What’s happening
We're working with our EV partner, Amey, to install EV chargers in street lampposts across Manchester.
The chargers help residents who do not have off-street parking charge their vehicles closer to home.

About the pilot
This pilot runs until June 2029.
We are focusing on areas where residents do not have off-street parking. If your street is included in the pilot, we will contact you with more information.
So far, 38 lamppost chargers have been installed across Manchester.
How to charge your vehicle
The current charging price is 45p per kWh.
You can start a charging session by:
- scanning the QR code on the charger
- using the Amey EVC app
- using an RFID card (used by some fleet vehicles)
Each charger includes step-by-step instructions to help you charge your vehicle.

Why we’re doing this
Transport is one of the biggest sources of air pollution in Manchester. This harms our health and adds to climate change.
We want to reduce this by helping more people switch from petrol or diesel cars to electric vehicles (EVs) – especially for journeys that can’t be walked, cycled, or taken by bus or tram.
Two main barriers stop people from choosing EVs:
- There aren’t enough places to charge them
- Chargers are often too far from home
To fix this, we’re testing new ways to make charging easier.
Where are we installing?
As part of this pilot we will be installing EV chargers on a number of lamp posts in the following wards:
- Burnage
- Charlestown
- Cheetham
- Chorlton
- Chorlton Park
- Clayton and Openshaw
- Didsbury east
- Didsbury west
- Miles Platting and Newton Heath
- Moston
- Northenden
- Rusholme
- Whalley Range
- Withington
These locations were chosen for several reasons. We prioritised areas where there was expected demand for EV charging, where residents had directly requested an EV charger, where there were more homes without off-street parking and where there were gaps in EV charging.
If you would like to have EV charging in your area, please suggest a location for an electric vehicle (EV) charge point. We will build these suggestions into future pilots and projects. We can't guarantee installation because not all locations will be safe or suitable for an EV charger, but we will consider them all.
Accessibility
We’re making chargers easier to use for everyone:
- Clear, easy-to-read text on chargers
- Simple guidance on our website
- Chargepoints will be installed at an accessible height for all users
- ZapMap via the Amey charging app will show accessibility features, like dropped kerbs or tarmac surfaces near chargers
- We’ll collect feedback from users and non-users to see what works and what we can improve
Our goal
We want everyone in Manchester to have a nearby, affordable and accessible place to charge their EV.
We’ll share updates and ask for your feedback throughout the pilot. Your views will help us improve and plan future projects.
