Childcare and Education

We have a range of courses for people who would like to move into a career in early years or education (Childcare or Teaching Assistants) or to progress in their current career.

Choose from the Childcare pathway (to work in childcare settings such as play groups, nurseries or childminding) or Teaching Assistants pathway (to work in either primary or secondary schools).

We have courses at different levels – you’ll be assessed and start at the right level for you – all the way up to Level 2.

You will do a placement as part of your programme and will need to have a “Disclosure and Barring Check”.

To get a job in this area you need good English and Maths Skills so you will also be given advice about your options to get the qualifications you need. You will also be able to take additional courses such as ‘Creative Skills for Working with Children’ or ‘Mentoring Skills’ or ‘Health and Safety’ to give you more skills to offer employers.

If English is not your first language and you need to improve your spoken and written English before taking this route, you could join one of our ESOL for Childcare courses.

We also have courses in teaching adults, as part of our volunteer programme.

Case Study: Mark – Childcare

Mark glover

I completed the NCFE Level 2 fast track Teaching Assistant course - Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools - at Abraham Moss Adult Learning Centre. Before that I did the PREP course, which helped me decide which pathway to go down, and I also achieved my Level 2 Maths with MAES.  So I feel I’m now in a really good position to get a job as a teaching assistant.

I am planning to join a teaching agency after completing my course and my eventual aim is to become a primary school teacher.  I have really enjoyed the course and am also really enjoying my placement.  I’m also doing voluntary work with play schemes which gives me a great opportunity to put the creative skills I’ve developed into practice.
