Planning and regeneration Projects outside the city centre

Moston Lane

An artists impression of how the square could look with open spaces, seating and greenery.

Moston Lane is a busy high street with over 130 shops and businesses. It’s full of community spirit and provides many local jobs, including at the nearby Tulketh Road industrial estate.

But the area has some problems:

  • Empty buildings and alleyways attract fly-tipping
  • Some buildings need fixing, including ones with historic value
  • The area can feel run-down to visitors and locals
  • Too many cars make it hard to walk or cycle safely in some places.

What are we doing

We want Moston Lane to be a place where people feel safe and welcome. In 2023, we agreed on the Neighbourhood Development Framework to help improve the area.

What the plan includes

  • Create a new public square for the community
  • Build more new homes
  • Improve privately rented homes
  • Support people to walk, cycle, and use public transport in and around the centre
  • Improve local services and spaces for everyone.

What has been done so far

We’ve already started work and finished some early projects:

  • Improved the Peace Gardens, St Dunstan’s Green, and the green space around Simpson Memorial Hall
  • Installed new alley gates and commercial waste collection facilities to help with rubbish and stop fly-tipping
  • Made roads safer by stopping dangerous parking and reducing traffic speeds in places
  • Repaired the roof, walls, and windows of Simpson Memorial Hall
  • Worked with housing groups like One Manchester and Jigsaw to build new affordable homes.

What’s next?

We’re planning to build a new public square on the empty land behind Moston Lane. This will be a big change for the area.

We will share more details this autumn. We will let you know how you can take part in shaping this exciting project.
