Strangeways

Strangeways is a historic area of Manchester with many businesses and jobs. But in recent years, crime and fake goods have caused problems in the area.
What we've done so far
We worked with Greater Manchester Police and other partners to stop illegal trading. This has helped real businesses grow and feel safer.
Why this area matters
Strangeways and Cheetham Hill are home to:
- Thousands of jobs and businesses
- Fashion, textiles, logistics, and creative industries
- Cultural venues and places to visit
There’s room for more growth. New businesses can move in and help Manchester economy grow. Strangeways can also help the city meet the need for new homes. The area is close to the city centre and has good transport links.
Planning for the future
Manchester and Salford Councils have created a Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF). This plan looks at how to improve the area over time.
What the plan includes
- Improve the local economy
- Create vibrant streets and green spaces
- Build more homes
- Build a new park
- Better walking and cycling paths around the area.
The SRF creates seven new ‘neighbourhoods’:
- Dutton Street: A residential and mixed-use area on the edge of the city centre.
- Lord Street and Derby Street: These two neighbourhoods are an important area for employment. More jobs can be created and potential places for businesses to set up.
- Cheetham Park: This area will have some homes around the outside of the park. In the future we can make the park nicer and more useful than it is now.
- Overbridge: This area will be the gateway to the new park from the city centre. It will have new homes, streets, shops and businesses. Many of these new homes will be near the new park and the city centre.
- Copper Park: This area will be a big new park shared between Manchester and Salford. The park will have playgrounds, sport facilities, wetlands, event spaces, and places for nature.
- HMP Manchester and Jury Street: There is a prison here now that might move one day. If the prison moves, then the area could have more housing and jobs. We are in talks with the government about the future of the prison and the area.
What’s happening now
The SRF has been approved by the council’s Executive and is now a material consideration to guide the future growth of the area.
Progress is already underway
- 1,000 new homes are being built on Trinity Way, including many affordable homes.
- Many local businesses in Cheetham Hill are growing into new and bigger buildings.
- We are working with the Business Growth Hub to support local firms.
- Action to stop fly-tipping and keep the streets clean.
What’s next?
Both councils will keep talking to local people and businesses as plans move forward.
