What we do now
Our staff and contractors react to reports of fly-tipping and littering by cleaning it up. We investigate who caused it and gather evidence.
We target areas that have regular fly-tipping and littering problems. We also educate people on the correct ways to get rid of items. We use data and reporting to plan the work.
Based on the feedback we received from residents, the strategy will aim to improve the work we already do.
Services
- Through Clean and Green Manchester funding we have put in thousands of new litter bins. They get emptied by our contractors.
- We ensure household bins get emptied.
- We offer to collect large items that people may struggle to get rid of.
- We investigate fly-tipping and litter cases and issue fines and other penalties.
Working with residents
- We do door-knocking in areas where we know there is a lot of fly-tipping and litter. We aim to educate residents on the issue.
- We hold events in areas to highlight how people can get rid of things in a proper way.
- We fund residents to create their own projects that can help make their area cleaner and greener. Find out more about Neighbourhood Investment Funding.
- We work with volunteers. These are residents who give up their free time to help make their areas cleaner and greener. This includes the Great British Spring Clean events, Friends of Parks groups and Keep Manchester Tidy. We also have volunteer roles within MCR:VIP.
Partners
- Keep Manchester Tidy works with Keep Britain Tidy. We help local schools to educate children about fly-tipping and littering. We have several ‘Eco Schools’. These pride themselves on helping keep their areas clean and green.
- We work with contractors, including Biffa and Redgate. We also work with housing providers, businesses and community groups and individuals.
