Environmental problems Fly-tipping and litter strategy 2026-35

Your views

In making this strategy we have listened to what residents and partners have told us. We have taken views from:

  • the Our Manchester Strategy: Over 8,000 clean and green related comments
  • UNICEF Child Friendly Cities project: We heard from over 11,000 children and young people. They said clean, green, safe neighbourhoods were a priority
  • Keep Britain Tidy Workshops: Staff, partners and community groups told us what they do to help
  • written and verbal views: Opinions from litter picking groups and individuals. As well as contractors, housing providers, businesses and community groups. We also spoke to charities and health and wellbeing providers. We also got opinions from school pupils and more
  • Making Manchester Fairer Sounding Board: We held groups to gather ideas and opinions
  • University of Manchester: Masters degree students provided research reports
  • councillor sessions: Elected members had online meetings. These considered evidence and opinion about their areas
  • internal staff survey: 116 council workers responded with opinions
  • strategy steering group: Staff from our neighbourhoods gave their experiences and opinions.

What we were told

Some examples of the responses from primary school children.

"When I see rubbish, I feel mad because it’s our environment to keep clean."

"I feel disappointed because there are so many bins everywhere."

"I feel if the world was alive, it would be disgusted and angry."

"I feel shocked, angry, disappointed and scared for the future."

"Sadly, I see loads of cardboard, plastic and even glass…it makes me feel shocked at what poor choices people make."

"I normally see dumped rubbish in alleyways. As well as mattresses and binbags that are bulging with very smelly rubbish. It makes me feel sad because I’d like to make the world rubbish-free and a better place for humans and animals."

"When I walk to school, the first thing I see is litter. It makes me shocked. We can do everything to stop it."

"Each time I go to the park I see rubbish everywhere on the grass. I feel nervous and worried what’s going to happen to the environment."

"When you dump rubbish it’s not good because people don’t like it and it also stinks a lot. I feel worried, dirty, sad, frustrated and bad at what will happen to Manchester."
