Changes to take place on Broom Lane (between Cronshaw Street and A6 Stockport Road)

In 2020 and 2021 we consulted around plans to make walking and cycling safer in Levenshulme and Burnage, including proposed measures for Broom Lane.

We have since reviewed one part of the proposed design - the section of Broom Lane near its junction with Tonbridge Road. Concerns were raised that the original proposed design may have had too big an impact on traffic flow at busy times. There were also concerns around the loss of two disabled parking bays.

We have revisited the design for this section and have come up with a proposal which we think is a better solution for this stretch.

This involves:

  1. Removing the build out and chicane originally proposed.
  2. The footway on the west side of Broom Lane being widened to 1.5m, in line with best practice (it is currently only 0.5m wide).
  3. Narrowing the carriageway, but still allowing enough space for traffic to flow both ways.
  4. Retaining parking bays on the east side of Broom Lane and widening them as cars using them currently encroach on the carriageway because they are very narrow.
  5. Road signs to warn drivers of the narrower carriageway as they approach.
  6. Raised crossing points at junctions to slow vehicles turning in and out of Tonbridge Road and Cronshaw Street.
  7. Double yellow lines being installed on the west side of Broom Lane from its junction with Stockport Road to its junction with Cronshaw Street to avoid parked cars blocking the carriageway.
  8. Double yellow lines being installed on the junctions of Broom Lane with Tonbridge Road and Cronshaw Street to prevent cars parking directly on the corner, making turning safer for vehicles and crossing safer for pedestrians.
