Our goal is to create a more sustainable city. One that’s fair and considers the challenges our residents face. Such as their health, work and the cost of living. Tackling climate change is fundamentally about improving the lives of people.
Our climate change action plan sets out how we'll continue to reduce our carbon emissions. How we'll further embed zero carbon in our day-to-day work. And how we'll support other climate plans for the city.
Wider benefits of climate action
Climate action helps us to improve our neighbourhoods, housing and transport. And grow our economy. In fact, climate action has many benefits. Such as:
- homes that are warmer and cheaper to run
- improved energy security
- reliable and clean transport
- cleaner air and better public health
- more walkable neighbourhoods and better green space
- enhanced safety and improved quality of life
- increased biodiversity, cleaner waterways and more sustainable land use
- better resilience to extreme weather and other climate change impacts
- economic growth and green jobs
Reducing emissions
Over 15 years, from 2010 to 2025, we reduced our emissions by 64%. That's a saving of 44,344 tonnes of carbon. A key change we've made is moving to cleaner energy for our buildings, vehicles and streetlights.
From 2025 to 2030, we aim to reduce our emissions by 34% – saving almost 43,000 tonnes of carbon. This will keep us on track to meet our goal to become zero carbon by 2038. Find out more about our science-based carbon reduction targets (our carbon budget).
To make it easier to digest, we’ve made a summary of our climate change action plan. And provided overviews of each section, so you can skip to the part you need. Or you can delve into the detail and download a pdf of the full plan.
