Place and infrastructure
Our place and infrastructure theme relates to buildings and energy, travel and the natural environment.
The climate change action plan sets out how we'll aim to work in a low-carbon and energy-efficient way. How we'll help the city to move to lower carbon travel and energy use. And how we'll make sure that we, and the city, are more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
This action will bring wider benefits for the city. Such as warmer homes that cost less to run and are more resilient to energy price changes. Better access to good green space (such as parks, woods and river valleys). Better blue space (such as rivers, canals, lakes and ponds). More wildlife and biodiversity. And cleaner air and improved health for people across the city.
Buildings and energy
Our action relating to buildings and energy will:
- lower carbon emissions from our estate and ensure it's resilient to climate change
- lower carbon emissions from our building projects
- promote the need for climate resilience in the development and retrofit of buildings
- grow the speed and scale of non-domestic retrofit across the city
- lower carbon emissions from homes we own
- boost the number of energy-efficient homes in the city
- grow renewable community energy generation, use and storage in the city (including community energy)
- lower carbon emissions from street lighting
- move us to a new renewable energy supply
- help to develop heat networks and decarbonise the Manchester Energy Network
Transport
Our action relating to transport will:
- lower carbon emissions from our vehicles and staff travel
- grow the number of our staff using low-carbon travel for their commute
- improve and grow the infrastructure for low-carbon travel
- make our infrastructure more climate resilient
- improve road safety and promote cycling and walking in the city
- grow access to electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the city
- lower emissions from the airport
- improve air quality in the city
Natural environment
Our action relating to the natural environment will:
- improve and grow green and blue spaces on our estate and across the city
- boost nature in the city by making and restoring habitats
- help to reduce flood and heat risk in the city
- upskill our teams on the benefits, use and design of green infrastructure
- make green infrastructure, like sustainable drainage, the norm for highway projects
- grow street tree cover in the areas with the most need
- maximise the benefits of biodiversity net gain from new development
- ensure regeneration has ambitious targets for the natural environment
- ensure we, and the city, know how buildings can use nature to be resilient to climate risk
