Planning and regeneration Projects outside the city centre

Gorton

Gorton is an important district centre in east Manchester. It’s well connected via Hyde Road (A57) and has several key assets. These include the popular Gorton Market Hall. And the new Gorton Hub, which provides learning, employment, health and community services.

These landmarks would benefit from a better connected and more coherent district centre. One with a more vibrant shopping area and more housing for local people.

We used feedback from a public consultation to create a Neighbourhood Development Framework. Key projects are:

  • Creating a new public square to host events and be the heart of Gorton for local people and visitors

  • Improving the diversity of shops

  • Improving walking and cycling routes to and through the local area

  • Delivering 400 new homes to meet local demand and create trade for local businesses

The library has moved to the new Gorton Hub and the old library building has been demolished. The next stage, will include the creation of a new square next to the market hall.
