Refugees
Refugee status means you’re recognised as a refugee, as defined in the Refugee Convention.
If the Home Office decides that you have a need for protection because you, in particular, are at risk of persecution in your country of origin, and your asylum claim falls under the grounds for protection in the Refugee Convention, you will be granted refugee status for a period of 5 years.
You may get humanitarian protection if you do not qualify for refugee status but cannot return to your own country.
You may get permission to stay for other reasons if you do not qualify for permission to stay as a refugee or for humanitarian reasons. How long you can stay will depend on your situation.
Anyone who has refugee status will be able to take up employment and access state benefits and healthcare services in the UK.
If you were in receipt of asylum support, this will stop once you are granted refugee status, and you will be responsible for finding your own accommodation.
